Wine is rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds which prevent the production of free radicals which lead to chain reactions causing cellular damage. Grapes contain antioxidants known as polyphenols, and since wine is made from grapes, drinking wine can raise the level of antioxidants in your blood (especially red wine, as red grape varieties, have a greater number of polyphenols).
Red wine increases antioxidants in your blood
In a study carried out to test this theory, 40 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 50 years of age were selected and made to drink 400ml of red wine per day for two weeks. Their blood was sampled before and after they drank the red wine, and it was found that red wine significantly increased antioxidants in their blood and lowered oxidative stress in their circulation.
Wine may reduce inflammation
A prolonged chronic inflammatory response can damage healthy cells, tissues and organs. Over time, it can also damage the DNA and cause internal scarring, increasing the risk of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, eye diseases, cancer and autoimmune disorders. The skin of grapes contains resveratrol which works as an anti-inflammatory compound and hence drinking wine can combat chronic inflammation.
In a study, it was found that people who consumed less than 40 grams of wine a day had increased inflammation compared to those who drank more wine.
Wine improves cardiovascular health
Polyphenol antioxidants present in red wine lower the risk of high blood pressure and diseases linked to high blood pressure such as hypertension. They also decrease the risk of high cholesterol and coronary heart disease, which is one of the leading causes of disease and death in the United States.
On the other hand, excess alcohol consumption can directly harm the heart as well, which is why moderate amounts of wine (one glass a day for females and two glasses a day for males) should be consumed to ensure better health.
